Overview
New York based Artist and Independent Producer Dara Birnbaum has achieved international recognition, spurring some of the most controversial discussions in contemporary media exploration. Her work addresses both the ideological and aesthetic character of mass and popular media imagery. Exhibition and screening of her work has permeated internationally recognized venues, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art, NYC; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; the Tate Gallery, London; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; and the KUNSTHALLE Wien, Vienna. Distinguished awards include: the American Film Institute's Maya Deren Award for Independent Film and Video Artists; Special Jury Prize-Deutsche Videokunstpreis, Südwestfunk Television & Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie; TV Picture Prize, Festival International de la Video et des Arts Electroniques, Locarno, Switzerland; amongst numerous others.
