Marcel Broodthaers - museum Kunsthaus Zürich

The Kunsthaus is presenting Marcel Broodthaers's graphic editions in a cabinet exhibition. The focus of the exhibition is the artist's critical questioning of the "museum" as an institution.

The cabinet exhibition, put together by guest curator Simone Gehr from the Kunsthaus's holdings, explores the question of what exactly Broodthaers's idea of an ideal museum was. What did the artist criticize about the museums of his time? And how can we reflect today's museum landscape on the basis of Broodthaers' works? These are considerations that the public also makes: Why are some works "worth" more than others and what role does the museum play in this monetary value assignment? Is a work only "genuine" if it is signed? And where do work inscriptions mislead us?

The exhibition focuses on Broodthaers's graphic editions. It is a group of works consisting of 25 works from his entire creative period and which the Kunsthaus's graphic arts collection owns in its entirety. For Broodthaers, the term "graphic editions" is relatively broad and includes not only prints but also film, photography and installations. The editions are supplemented by a few loans of related groups of works, such as open letters or films by the artist.
