Book Signing of Soufiane Ababri's First Book Published by The Steidz
Librairie Marian Goodman is pleased to invite you to a book signing by Soufiane Ababri (b. 1985 in Rabat, Morocco) that will take place at the bookshop on Saturday, 4 September, from 6 – 8:30 pm CET.
The first book of Soufiane Ababri’s work, La rose donne naissance à une épine et une épine donne naissance à une rose, edited by The Steidz, gathers an exclusive series of 34 drawings made by the artist. From masculine portraits to flowers of every type, these recurring themes infuse the book to create a kind of personal poetry: simultaneously raw and symbolic through a vivid, passionate and carnal aspect.
The book begins with an email by Ababri to a certain “Guillaume,” whose first name is only known by the reader. It ends with an essay by the French sociologist Antoine Idier, who enlightens us on the central themes behind the drawings—race, homosexuality, love and identity—in a reponse stylisitically similar to the artist’s email.
The book's layout, created by The Steidz, plays with two main colors: deep blue and soft pink—a reminder of the continuous duality of emotions, identity, or gender.
Two exclusive prints, also published by The Steidz, from Ababri's series of drawings will be available during the book signing.
