Tavares Strachan - The Day Tomorrow Began Columbus Museum of Art

Tavares Strachan: The Day Tomorrow Began is the first museum survey in the U.S. of pathbreaking conceptual artist Tavares Strachan. Defining himself as an explorer and storyteller, Strachan has developed a singular artistic practice fusing art, science, and cultural inquiry. At the heart of the exhibition is his Encyclopedia of Invisibility, an evolving compendium of “hidden” histories, which the artist has compiled into an open-ended archive of figures, events, and ideas suppressed within canonizing historical narratives. The Encyclopedia has inspired many of Strachan’s recent projects, including his monumental sculptures, works in glass and ceramic, paintings, tapestries, self-playing musical instruments, and room-scale installations, which the exhibition weaves into an immersive multisensory experience. Key to this experience, and to Strachan’s exploration of underground knowledge systems, is Bar Room (2022/2025), a fully operational rum bar, café, and community gathering place that will remain open at The Pizzuti as a permanent installation after the exhibition’s duration.

Tavares Strachan: The Day Tomorrow Began is co-organized by Columbus Museum of Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
