A New Dan Graham Pavilion LaM in Villeneuve d'Ascq

The garden welcomes a new contemporary sculpture: Bayonne Pavilion by Dan Graham, a major figure in minimalism and conceptual art . His glass and steel pavilions, designed from the 1980s onwards, invite visitors to physically experience the notions of reflection and reciprocity of gaze.

Installed opposite the building designed by Manuelle Gautrand, this artwork offers a counterpoint to its architecture. It invites visitors to approach the concrete mashrabiya screens while exploring their transparency and interplay of light. Dan Graham described his pavilions as "social spaces," where one encounters others while simultaneously becoming aware of oneself. At once a passage defining a constrained space and an open area where the landscape is reflected, Bayonne Pavilion offers a sensory experience of the transition from inside to outside.
