Conversations | The game of art: Malcolm Jenkins and Tavares Strachan Art Basel Miami Beach

Malcolm Jenkins, CEO, Philadelphia
Tavares Strachan, Artist, New York and Nassau
Moderator: Kimberly Drew, Independent Curator, London

How can athletes and artists learn from each other? When he first visited Tavares Strachan’s studio, two-time Super Bowl champion Malcolm Jenkins was struck by the parallels between disciplines, which through practice, create something truly extraordinary. That visit sent him on a collecting journey, encouraging him to create opportunities for artists and athletes to build relationships and learn about investing, financial literacy, and growth outside of the game. In this conversation moderated by curator Kimberly Drew, Jenkins and Strachan revisit their momentous encounter and discuss their experience in the art and sports worlds, charting a shared path toward meaningful cultural change.

Two-time Super Bowl champion, three-time Pro Bowl legend, and Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year finalist, Malcolm Jenkins does not just win games – he transforms industries and inspires audiences. Over 13 seasons with the Saints and Eagles, he became a household name, known for his leadership on and off the field. Now a visionary CEO, investor, and author, Jenkins brings that same championship mindset to boardrooms and global stages – turning casual consumers into passionate brand advocates.

Tavares Strachan was born in Nassau, Bahamas, and currently lives and works between New York City and Nassau. He received a BFA in Glass from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2003 and an MFA in Sculpture from Yale University in 2006. He was the recipient of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation fellowship (2022) and was Artist in Residence at the Getty Research Institute (2019–20).

Kimberly Drew is a leading voice in contemporary culture. She has held influential roles at the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and most recently served as the curatorial director at Pace Gallery. She is the co-editor, with J. Wortham, of the critically acclaimed anthology Black Futures, and the author of This Is What I Know About Art
