Steve MᶜQueen - Occupied City Rijksmuseum
The Rijksmuseum presents a 34-hour version of Steve MᶜQueen’s epic film Occupied City, based on Bianca Stigter’s Atlas of an Occupied City - Amsterdam 1940 - 1945. In his film, MᶜQueen has created two interlocking portraits of Amsterdam: a door-to-door excavation of the occupation that still haunts the city today, and a vivid journey through recent years of pandemic and protest.
Occupied City will be shown continuously on the façade of the museum. A version of the 34-hour film with sound and voice-over will be shown in the auditorium of the Rijksmuseum during the museum’s specified weekend hours. The presentation coincides with Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary and the commemoration of 80 years of liberation.
