Marian Goodman Gallery New York is very pleased to announce an exhibition with Tino Sehgal. This will be the second presentation of Sehgal’s work at the New York gallery and the first since his inaugural exhibition This Situation over a decade ago in 2007. Renowned as one of the most important artists of his generation, Tino Sehgal’s critical acclaim derives from his radical artistic practice that takes the form of “constructed situations”: live encounters between visitors and those enacting the work. Their ephemeral beauty rests in the fleeting specificity of the encounter, where players often engage the visitors with their active participation in constructing the piece.

Marian Goodman Gallery New York is very pleased to announce an exhibition with Tino Sehgal, that will run from May 3 – June 15, 2019. This will be the second presentation of Sehgal’s work at the New York gallery and the first since his inaugural exhibition This Situation over a decade ago in 2007.
Renowned as one of the most important artists of his generation, Tino Sehgal’s critical acclaim derives from his radical artistic practice that takes the form of “constructed situations”: live encounters between visitors and those enacting the work. Their ephemeral beauty rests in the fleeting specificity of the encounter, where players often engage the visitors with their active participation in constructing the piece. Sehgal’s abandoning of material production in favor of lived experience is nevertheless achieved with a sensitivity to classical considerations of form, composition and space, grounded not only in the history of dance but also western traditions of sculpture and painting. Based on the artist’s compositions and choreographies, the works unfold in the adaptations of their respective players, thereby immersing their beholders in experiences ranging from individualized and intimate encounters to collectively shared situations. Although, as a rule, Sehgal’s works are always present throughout the entire opening hours of the exhibition, they remain mutable and never stay the same. In response to and in interaction with their respective audience, they transition through open patterns of forms, expressions and varying levels of energetic intensity.
The exhibition will present the U.S. debut of Yet untitled, a work in movement and sound. Yet untitled was first presented in the 55th Venice Biennale where Sehgal was awarded the Golden Lion for best artist. Yet untitled has subsequently been presented in exhibitions of Sehgal’s work at the Martin Gropius Bau, Berlin, The Palais Garnier, Opera National de Paris and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam.
In this latest incarnation, Sehgal will present Yet untitled on a floor piece by Pierre Huyghe, titled 6 PM, 2000 and enacted by Margherita D’Adamo, Sandhya Daemgen, Nikima Jagudajev, Josh Johnson, Justin F. Kennedy, Thomas Proksch and Lizzie Sells.
Tino Sehgal (b. 1976, London, England) lives and works in Berlin. In 2018 he co-curated week-long series of live works entitled ‘A Prelude to the Shed’ which took place within a purpose built architectural setting by Kunlé Adeyemi. The program included Sehgal’s own work alongside a broad range of artists including William Forsythe and Azealia Banks, which heralded the opening of The Shed’s permanent home. His work has been the subject of several solo exhibitions, recently at Officine Grandi Riparazioni, Turin (2018); V-A-C Foundation, Moscow; Fondation Beyeler, Switzerland (2017); Jemaa el-Fna, Marrakesh; Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2016); Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Martin-Gropius-Bau, Berlin (2015); Pinacoteca, Sao Paulo and CCBB, Rio de Janeiro (2014); Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing (2013); Tate Modern, London (2012); and Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (2010) and Kunsthaus Bregenz (2006), among others.
Sehgal has been selected to participate in notable group exhibitions, such as Stories of Almost Everyone, Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2018); 12th Havana Biennial (2015); 55th Venice Biennale (2013); Documenta 13, Kassel, Germany (2012); 9th Shanghai Biennale (2012); 8th Gwangju Biennale (2010); and 4th Berlin Biennale (2006). He represented Germany at the 51st Venice Biennale (2005); and at Manifesta 4, Frankfurt (2002).
