Dan Graham: Model Making, Spring 2023
The Orchid Foundation, High School through College

The Orchid Foundation visited the exhibition Dan Graham: Is there life after breakfast?, curated by Peter Fischli, on view in our NY gallery during Spring 2023.

Students and organizers, inspired by the works on view, particularly the maquettes created by the artist and his peers, were guided through various techniques to create models of their own.

The Orchid Foundation is a mentorship and scholarship program dedicated to supporting underserved high school girls to and through college.

Before beginning the project, students toured Dan Graham's exhibition, which showcased a variety of works from over three decades. They looked for inspiration from the many models on display in the South Gallery, including prints, objects, and collectibles assembled as a private cosmology invoking the work of Fischli/Weiss— which ranged from informal bricolages to a few rare novelties from the artist’s personal collection.

The students also met with various staff members of the gallery as part of their Career Day, learning about the many different professional paths one can take in the arts.

Using reflective mylar, colored plastic films, foamcore and cardboard, students learned a variety of techniques to create three-dimensional objects from their imagination. The gallery's art handlers assisted in carving surfaces to create curves and bases for their new structures.
