Gabriel Orozco at TEFAF
Marian Goodman Gallery is excited to present a solo booth of new work by renowned Mexican artist Gabriel Orozco for the TEFAF New York Spring Fair - Booth 64 at the Park Avenue Armory, New York.
Over the past few years Gabriel Orozco has been dividing his time mainly between Bali, Tokyo and Mexico City. Orozco’s work often draws inspiration from his surrounding environment and he regularly incorporates locally found materials into his practice. Though he has worked with sculpture throughout his career, living in Bali for the past year has provided him the opportunity to experiment with the medium of limestone, where there is a long tradition of stone carving passed down amongst master artisans.
The title of this ongoing body of work, begun in 2017, the limestone Dés, translates from French to Dice in English and playfully refers to the cubic shape of the pieces. But the title also evokes elements of chance, incidental consequences, games and sport—all which are recurrent themes throughout Orozco’s work. The circular carvings in the limestone; the rotations of the subtracted parts, introduce his conceptual ideas of intersections and mobility to a new surface.
Marian Goodman Gallery will present a solo exhibition of Orozco’s work in New York in September 2018.
