It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Lothar Baumgarten.
In a career spanning five decades, Lothar drew wide acclaim and respect for a singularly powerful and diverse body of work, from photography, to 16 mm films, slide projections, recordings, drawings, prints, artist books, short stories, as well as site-specific works, wall drawings and architecture-related interventions.
Today we mourn the loss of this extraordinary artist, a powerful writer, and a brilliant friend.
We will remember him always and the impact he has had on our lives will live on in his work.
Lothar Baumgarten’s 1978 film, “Ursprung der Nacht” (Amazonas Kosmos) / “Origin of the Night” (Amazon Cosmos), is part of the XIV Cuenca Biennial. The theme of this year's biennial is "Living Structures. Art as a plural experience," and it is curated by Jesus Fuenmayor.
This curatorial proposal is an invitation to reflect on the ways in which we relate to art in order to focus on the idea of art as a living and plural experience: aesthetic, sensorial, intellectual, emotional, psychological, but also political, sociological, and anthropological.
Pinacoteca de São Paulo presents "Invention of Origin" which takes as the starting point the film "The Origin of the Night: Amazon Cosmos (1973-77)," by Lothar Baumgarten. The film has never been released in Brazil, and will be presented alongside a selection of works by four Brazilian artists — Antonio Dias, Carmela Gross, Solange Pessoa and Tunga. In common, the selected works allude to primordial times and actions which could have contributed to the narratives about the origin of life.
The Reconfigured Landscape, a group exhibition at the Centro Botín in Santander, Spain, will host a selection of works from the Botín Foundation collection with works by renowned national and international artists who started creating in the final decades of the 20th century.
Artists such as Leonor Antunes, Lothar Baumgarten, Tacita Dean, and Julie Mehretu reveal the different ways of representing the world around them and offer visitors a historic perspective of the work of the Botín Foundation in the field of the visual arts in the past decade. Most of the pieces have never been exhibited before.
There will be a screening of Lothar Baumgarten's 1978 film, "Der Ursprung der Nacht (Amazonas Kosmos)" at the IHME festival in Helsinki, Finland. The 2018 edition of IHME is dedicated to non-human species.
The screening will be at Cinema Korjaamo Kino from 4 – 5:30 p.m. For more information please visit ihmefestival.fi.
